Interactions of the Abstract Body by Josiah McElheny was presented as part of Hayward Gallery’s 50th anniversary exhibition ‘Shape Shifters’ alongside works by internationally acclaimed artists such as Anish Kapoor, Richard Wilson and Yayoi Kusama. Interactions of the Abstract Body is activated by professional dancers who wear the artist’s mirrored wooden sculptures, ‘costumes’, moving through the gallery space and interacting with visitors as well as other artworks in a continuous performance. Visitors find themselves fleetingly reflected in the mirrors in place of the body of the performer as the performers weave through the gallery.
